70s Vibes – Groovy Jives

The greatest music of all time was recorded in the 70s – we are talking Zeppelin, Journey, Foreigner, Pink Floyd, I could go on… Needless to say the style is rad too. I am really digging the 70s jams going on in the fashion world right now. Ever since Nicole Richie rocked her boho style post “Simple Life,” I was hooked. These bell bottoms were an awesome find in Hawaii. I really started with these “bad boys” (fit for the Brady Bunch) as a base for this look. This look is also perfect for… you guessed it… FESTIVAL season! Even if you’re not throwing down a down payment on a Ford Focus to listen to jams in a dustbowl with the #Jenners, rock out to some chill tunes on your iPod and bust out some flares – you’ll feel Groovy.

Little know this fun fact about yours truly, but I was a tomboy growing up. I was a knee-skinning, boy clothes wearing, soccer playing chick. All my friend were boys – girls were so drama drama. I still standby this, although I like my blush colors and designer bags. I, obviously, am in love with the sports luxe. Anytime I can sport my Saint Laurent and adidas in the same look, I am a happy recovered tomboy.

I think men’s wear on women was cool, is cool, and always will be cool. I love a shirt dress because there is something effortlessly chic about it. You literally just throw it on! I like the bowler hat because it adds to the menswear theme and I feel like Charlie Chaplin, or Winston Churchill #winwin. These lacey biker shorts add some grunge along with the cherry Docs. This ensemble is ideal for a lazy weekend. Cheers!

What’s a better excuse to wear sequins than the start of the holiday season!? I feel like a Golden Girl –  I am so happy to sparkle like this. I think it’s hard to not look moderately glamorous with a full midi skirt and a little sparkle. And how chic is this little red Chanel dupe!? 25 bucks y’all! I am also really enjoying this half-up topknot! Try it out for Christmas parties. Cheers!

C’est bon! A born worrier, I am constantly reminding myself, “it’s all good.” I am really keen on French typography as well so this shirt is a win win. Also, this sweater – softest cardi in the world. If you like your personal space though, I would not recommend it. People cannot help but pet you like a cat. I really like the mix of whites in this ensemble. The cream cardigan offset by the clean and crisp white of the tee is quite cool. I also think the juxtaposition of the structured letters in the tee shirt with the fuzzy and soft texture of the sweater is quite smart.

Thankful for Sparkles & Elastic Waistbands

I have no sympathy for those who complain at Thanksgiving dinner for being too full when they are wearing jeans, dress pants, or even chinos – rookie mistake. We were given the elastic waistband for a reason. Today I looked pretty derrrnnn fancy, but I was still comfortable enough in my Express sequined mini skirt (with a very stretchy waistband) to consume 2 Thanksgiving dinners. Yes, that’s right – dos meals – deux. It’s hardly a 4X Gilmore Girls feast, however, it’s harder than it sounds. You don’t want to offend any grandmas by passing on their famous stuffing or the 24 pound turkey. Elastic is the way to go. This is also a great example of how you can get away with mixing textures and patterns. I think people shy away from purchasing pieces like sequin minis because they aren’t sure what to pair them with. Who says you have to wear a boring solid blouse? Why not pair it with a great pattern like I have here!? I love this look. The skirt is more versatile than you would think. Be brave! Happy Thanksgiving and gobble gobble!

The more Gilmore Girls I binge, the more I want to be an Ivy League blue-blood. The risks of mutation, however, brought on by incest is a bit unappealing. I can safely say my Revolutionary War ancestors were not related to the Croatians. Phew! This Tuesday, I was feeling exceptionally preppy, so I wore my gingham banana republic button up and a smart blazer. Tell me I am not the vision of respectableness.

Happy Monday, friends! California is always a tad hesitant to bring us fall, but I think it’s starting to get keen on the idea. Today’s high was a whopping 72! Pretty decent, California. I will take it! Speaking of ‘le fall’, I am all about watching autumnal movies to get into the spirit.  Whether it’s a scary movie, a cozy movie (You’ve Got Mail anyone!? Can I get a HEYYY), or a cheesy Halloween movie from your childhood, like, say… Hocus Pocus! This movie is all about the theatrics and hackneyed Salem history, but I think that’s why I like it so much. Plus! I love the Stevie Nicks/Sanderson sister look! My outfit today was not picked out without these factors in mind. I’m trying to channel SJP! The pretty witch! I hope your Halloween week is fun and full of hocus pocus!

Alo-ha! It’s summertime and tropical prints have arrived! You can’t swing a dead cat in the fashion world without hitting a Hawaiian shirt, pineapple jewelry, or even palm tree printed pants. These fun prints are a lovely way to embrace the warmer weather and the marvelous vacations we take this time of year close to the equator. I remember the first time I went to Hawaii. I was ten and insisted on having a Hawaiian shirt. I bought a men’s O’neill shirt, at Costco of course. I was hap-pen-ing in my Velcro sandals, drowning in my men’s tropical button-up. I really have always been a huge fan of the Hawaain shirt, and I’m excited for these modern takes on the old favorite available in women’s cuts. I really love these selections.

Aloha! (Remember, it’s the same coming or going!)

“We’re the Gladiators” (now, sing all together with Lorde)

Screen Shot 2014-03-21 at 7.46.38 PM

I can remember in 2008 (yes, I am going to get year specific here) when gladiator sandals were starting to merge onto the scene. My initial thoughts were, ‘guuuuurlllll you goin’ to a toga party?’ (Because that is completely how I articulate my thoughts). I was too judgmental. Like any new trend, we evaluate the lasting power. Who knew with the skinny jeans? Bootleg jeans are now the new mom jeans, and mom jeans are the new Topshop best seller! Gladiator sandals can be subtle or “in ya FACE.” These sandals are quite versatile, they always look cool and boho, and they give those flip flops a rest. We all know flip flops are sloppy and we should limit them to the poolside and gym shower. They are fungus protectors, not fashion. I think the versatility and effortlessness is what makes gladiators a favored sandal choice. We are going on almost 8 years now, gladiator sandal. You go Glen Coco. Snaps for you! Here are my four different takes on the gladiator for four different types of women. I would wear them all, but it would’t be the first time I have been told “it’s like you’re four different people, Hannah!”

1. Steve Madden “Plato” Sandal, $46.86. These “pop-a-color” sandals are super fresh. I am really fond of the tangerine hue. There is also something about these sandals that reminds me of the salt water sandals I used to wear when I was little, but much more modern and sophisticated. Can we just comment on he name as well… Plato? Get it? Greek philosopher! So fetch.

2. Stuart Weitzman Nappa Leather Gladiator Sandals, $398. These bad boys are daaaarrrrring. I think “gladiator inspired” is too lenient for these sandals – hashtag: Russel Crowe. I used to be afraid of the gladiators that came up so high, but now I think they are supes amaze. I can just see these paired with little bohemian tunic dresses and beachy waves – a spring and summer staple for the boho ladies.

3. Tan Metal Heel Gladiator Sandals, $38. These need a new name, but these are a sophisticated take on the gladiator. Never too much, and very classy, these sandals would be very versatile in any lady’s wardrobe. Also, a tribute to the petite women, these sandals will offer that relaxed bohemian feel, but still offer that little bit of height you lose with flats (your feet will also thank you for the arch support, real flat sandals all day can make your pups bark!)

4. “Cachetta” Metalic Gladiator Sandal, $995. I loved these before I knew they were Louboutins! These are just so luxe and visually interesting. The straps almost mimic bangles for your feet. The gold sheen and the beautiful lines make these gladiator sandals truly remarkable. I do not think I can justify the almost 1k price tag, but I can appreciate the design and visualize possible outfits in my head.
